Sesame Street Live colors kids' worlds

Sweep those clouds away for a sunny day on Sesame Street Live with Elmo (below), Zoe, Big Bird, Oscar and the rest of the gang. This time, take a peek at "Elmo's Coloring Book" as our furry red friend joins Professor Art and his helpers the Palettes for a rainbow of fun and songs such as "Fuzzy and Blue," "Red Hot Tango" and "Yellow Polka."

A walk for pets' sake

Sunday morning's PetWalk is a benefit for the Hawaiian Humane Society. Pictured above is a previous year's event.

PetWalk this way with the Hawaiian Humane Society at the organization's annual grassroots fund-raiser. HMSA joins the Humane Society for the 15th year of this charity walk at Magic Island and Ala Moana beach park. Participants can choose a 2-mile course or a 1-mile version for smaller animals. The fun includes a pet costume contest, refreshments, pet games and entertainment. Talented pets that can perform tricks, such as talking parrots and skateboarding dogs, are encouraged to be a part of the events.

Drill Team shows its stuff

Drill Team Hawaii, a dance troupe of girls from preschool to high school, is showcased tonight at the Hawai'i Theatre.

Precision dance group Drill Team Hawaii presents its 11th annual Dance Showcase with 40 new dance routines and choreography that includes jazz, hip-hop, ballet and gymnastics. The award-winning troupe features girls ages preschool to high school. The Dancing Dads also take to the stage.

In honor of Kamehameha


Honor the life of King Kamehameha the Great at any number of celebrations this weekend. Kamehameha Day is Saturday.

The King Kamehameha Celebration Commission hosts the annual lei-draping ceremony and floral parade; this year's theme is "Keepers of the Treasures."

The Royal Hawaiian Band starts things off at 3:30 p.m. with a prelude to the ceremonies at the King Kamehameha statue, which will be draped with fragrant and colorful lei.

The 89th annual Kamehameha Day parade gets under way bright and early with floral floats, costumed pa'u riders and marching bands. The parade ends at Kapi'olani Park, which hosts the Na Hana No'eau o Ka Pakipika cultural festival. The parade awards will be presented at that event.

The 2nd annual Na Hana No'eau o Ka Pakipika cultural fair includes demonstrations and displays of Japanese and Hawaiian culture. Entertainers include Red Thunder, Na Hoa, the Halla Huhm Dance Studio and the Waimanalo Sunset Band. This is a joint event with the Pan-Pacific Festival — Matsuri in Hawaii.

Celebrate Kamehameha Day with a lu'au featuring entertainment by Keali'ika'apunihonua Ke'ena A'o Hula and Kawaiaha'o Church school keiki. Craft items such as feather and silk lei, koa jewelry, lauhala and clothes will be available. Lu'au seatings are 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Likeke Hall. Pick-up and takeout will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Kawaiaha'o Street.

The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center pays tribute to Kamehameha I with performances by Halau Hula O Maiki, and the group Holunape. The Royal Order of Kamehameha I opens and closes the event with an honorary ceremony for the king. A photo display on the life of Kamehameha is on public view through Saturday as part of the center's ongoing Monarchy Series.

Pan-Pacific Festival begins

The 26th annual Pan-Pacific Festival — Matsuri in Hawaii offers a weekend of cultural goodies, an energetic street party and a colorful parade. A performing arts showcase happens each day of the festival, at Ala Moana Center and the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. In addition, the 4th annual Pan-Pacific Hula Festival takes place noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Ala Moana Center. Other highlights:

The Pan-Pacific Ho'olaule'a offers entertainment from Hawai'i and Japan, including headliner Raiatea Helm. The Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning Helm takes to the Lewers Street stage at 9 p.m. for an hourlong concert. Additional performers include a Japanese flamenco dancer, the Royal Hawaiian Band, hula halau, bon dance and taiko drummers. The street will be filled with craft and activity booths, entertainment stages and an outdoor international marketplace of ethnic food.

The highlight of the festival is the grand finale Pan-Pacific Matsuri Parade that closes the three-day celebration. Expect a vibrant array of floats, marching bands and ethnic groups.


Franti plays acoustic

Michael Franti of Spearhead returns to O'ahu with friends for an acoustic concert. Franti played last year's Kokua Festival, and the singer/songwriter has also performed with musical greats such as Ziggy Marley, Dave Matthews and Ben Harper. (His O'ahu appearance comes just before a screening of his new documentary, "I Know I'm Not Alone," at the Maui Film Festival Thursday.) Doors open at 6 p.m.

Maunalua kicks off Moonlight Mele series

Take advantage of the summer weather at the Bishop Museum's Moonlight Mele on the Lawn concert series. Kicking off the three-concert series under the stars will be Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning trio Maunalua, above. The July concert features Ho'okena and Da Braddahs, and August wraps things up with The Makaha Sons. Concert-goers are welcome to arrive early to browse the museum's exhibits before the show.

Music on sale

It'll be new to you at Hawai'i Public Radio's annual Almost New Music Sale benefit. The goodies include LPs, CDs, DVDs, videos, laser discs, sheet music and stereo equipment. HPR members get first pickings today, when the doors open for them from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

After noon, doors open to the general public. The admission fee includes one free LP or two free cassettes.

Kumu Kahua Theatre brings back its hit "Aloha Las Vegas" for benefit performances in conjunction with the Hawaii United Okinawa Association and UH-Hilo. A retired baker from Liliha debates moving from Hawai'i to its infamous "ninth island" in this dramedy, directed by Harry Wong.

A bit of dance wizardry

Use your imagination and follow the yellow brick road to "ImaginOZtion," a contemporary take on "The Wizard of Oz" by the Honolulu Dance Studio.
