FESTIVAL: June 18

Feel the "Rhythm of the Islands" at a festival that showcases percussion instruments. The renowned Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble kicks off the festivities, which also include entertainment by the Honbushin International Drummers, the Saint Louis High School Philippine Heritage Club and other cultural organizations. Endo, left, will lead two taiko demonstrations after his performance, and Miss Hawaii 2005 will also be on site. The 53rd Cherry Blossom Festival queen and court will present an exhibit on taiko and be on hand for a drum-making activity. Admission is free.

CONCERT: June 28

The Waikiki Aquarium's Ke Kani O Ke Kai summer concert series kicks off with Na Palapalai and Sonny Ching's hula halau. Subsequent headliners include Hapa, Na Leo Pilimehana (below), The Beamers and IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre. Each concert is $18 general, $10 ages 7-12 and free for those 6 and younger; $15 and $7 for Friends of Waikiki Aquarium members. FOWA members may also pay $60 for all five concerts. Doors open at 6 p.m.

COMEDY: July 1

Breakthrough comic Charlie Murphy and friends from the Comedy Central hit "Chappelle's Show" extend the laughter from the TV to the stage. Presented by The Laugh Factory, Charlie Murphy is the older brother of famed actor-comedian Eddie Murphy. Also a successful Hollywood screenwriter and actor, Murphy is best known for his "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories" sketches that recount his adventures as a former bodyguard for his brother. Tickets: $30, $40 and $50.

CELEBRATION: July 3

Make the July 4th holiday last a little longer with a pre-Independence Day bash that includes entertainment on multiple stages, cotton candy and popcorn, face and hair painting and a balloon artist. The event also includes a fashion show with local models, the Roosevelt cheerleaders and strolling entertainers. The evening's highlight will be a vibrant fireworks display over Honolulu Harbor at 8:45 p.m. Admission is free.

Or get an ocean perspective on the holiday with the Star of Honolulu's 3rd of July cruise. All three levels of fun feature a bon voyage champagne toast, entertainment and an ocean view of the colorful fireworks. Rates start at $29.25.

CONCERT: July 6-Aug. 10

Get ready for a magical musical menagerie as Starbucks revives the summer concert series Wildest Show in Town. Every Wednesday from July 6 to Aug. 10, the Honolulu Zoo comes alive after hours with local performers taking to the lawn stage. Noel Okimoto and Friends kick off the series, with subsequent entertainers including Kapena; Maunalua; Daniel Ho (right) and Roy Sakuma's 'Ukulele Super Keiki; Frank DeLima; and Rocky Brown. Admission is $2; doors open at 4:35 p.m.

CONCERT: July 9

The 4th annual Guitars Under the Stars jazz festival lights up the North Shore with the sounds of Grammy award winner Chuck Mangione, right. "The Feeling's Back" with the upbeat pop and bop jazz of international recording artist Mangione. The dazzling night includes telescopes for stargazers, food, beverages and a fireworks show. Tickets are $30 advance and $35 at the door.

STAGE: July 14-31

Flowers are in bloom this summer as Kumu Kahua Theatre reprises its season hit "Half Dozen Long Stem." Written by local playwright and Advertiser columnist Lee Cataluna, this comedy focuses on the quirky employees and customers of a Honolulu flower and lei shop. R. Kevin Doyle directs. Tickets range from $5 to $16.

Knack attack

Tickets are on sale for a concert by The Knack (surely you recall the No. 1 hit "My Sharona"!) Aug. 3 at Pipeline Cafe. General admission is $24; VIP tickets are $60, including a private backstage area and private bar. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster outlets. Doors open at 6 p.m., the show begins at 7 p.m. (877) 750-4400.

The band performed last night in the TV series "Hit Me Baby One More Time," in which former top-10 acts take to the stage again and are judged by the viewing audience. It was launched last week on NBC.

Only onions

Whalers Village hosts the 16th annual Maui Onion Festival Aug. 6-7, when Maui's sweet onions rule.

BayFest in July

BayFest Hawaii takes place July 1-4 at the Marine Corps Base Hawai'i in Kane'ohe, featuring a carnival, car show, watersports, Island lifestyle expo, entertainment and fireworks. On the entertainment lineup: Papa Roach July 1, Montgomery Gentry July 2, Brad Paisley July 3 and Lynyrd Skynyrd July 4. Details at www.bayfesthawaii.com.
