UH sailing team slips to second in nationals

Advertiser Staff

Defending champion University of Hawai'i relinquished the lead yesterday after the second round of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Coed Dinghy Championships on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas.

Hawai'i has 172 points, 11 behind leader Hobart/William Smith. Dartmouth is third in the 18-team field with 178 points entering today's final races.

"It was a wild one today," UH coach Andy Johnson said. "The wind was howling and we had a few questionable calls from the judges go against us. I feel good heading into tomorrow. An 11-point deficit isn't too hard to overcome."

UH All-Americans Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock relinquished their lead in A division. They're in second with 69 points, six off the pace held by the Dartmouth crew. USC is a distant third with 84 points.

The UH team of Matt Stine, Cassandra Harris, Shandy Buckley, Scott DeCurtis and Becky Mabardy is fifth in B division with 103 points. Hobart/William Smith leads with a low-best score of 72.
