The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team came up short in its bid for a second straight national title, but earned its fourth straight top-three finish yesterday at Austin, Texas.
Hobart/William Smith, located at Geneva, N.Y., won the national title at the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championships at Lake Travis with 197 points. Hawai'i (235) was second and Dartmouth (247) was third.
UH entered the final day of action in second place, down just 11 points with eight races remaining, but Hobart/William Smith, winners of the Team Racing Championships three days earlier, extended its lead to take the title.
All-Americans Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock won two of their final four races for Hawai'i. The pair tallied a low of 82 points in the "A" division, 19 points ahead of its nearest competition.
"The wind was blowing hard," head coach Andy Johnson said. "We pulled within seven points after the first race of the day with Bryan (Lake) and Jen (Warnock) really putting down the hammer. Hobart/William Smith was just phenomenal. I'm really proud of our kids, they hung in there."
