Kim leads Publinx qualifying

Kimberly Kim, a 13-year-old from Hilo, shot a 1-under-par 72 at Wailua Golf Course yesterday to lead the Hawai'i qualifying for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.
Kim, who will be a freshman at Waiakea High in the fall, will be joined by 17-year-old Mari Chun and 11-year-old Cyd Okino in the 29th national tournament at Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo., July 11 to 16.
Chun, a 2005 Kamehameha Schools graduate who will be a freshman at Stanford in the fall, shot even-par 73 while Okino beat Kim's older sister, Christine, in a three-hole playoff for the final spot. Both had shot 1-over 74.
Christine Kim will be the first alternate and Whitney Ueno (79) the second alternate.

Ota gets Publinx berth
Jonathan Ota shot 69-71140 yesterday at Wailua Golf Course to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio, July 11 to 16.
Casey Watabu (146) is first alternate and Clesson Pang (149) second alternate.
Maekawa also qualifies
Elsewhere, Sean Maekawa, a 15-year-old from Pa'auilo on the Big Island, shot 2-under-par 140 yesterday at Hilo Municipal Golf Course to earn a berth in the national public links tournament.
Maekawa, who will be a junior at Honoka'a High, had rounds of 72 and 68 to edge University of Hawai'i golfer Jarett Hamamoto (73-68141). Henry Park, a junior golfer from Waikoloa, is the second alternate after shooting 69-74143.
HANDBOARDING
Santos a triple-winner
Kai Santos won three divisions, including the grand championship, at the Redwings Memorial World Championship of Handboarding last weekend at Point Panic.
Santos won the open men's division (all ages) and the senior men's division (ages 31 to 40), and then dominated the grand championship heat.
Malissa Kaawa won the open women's division and placed third in the grand championship heat. Kelly Craven placed second in the open women's division and second in the grand championship heat.
Also last weekend at Point Panic, Jarrett Liu won the Royal Richard Memorial World Championship of Paepo Boarding. Claude Higa placed second.
