Woman killed in crash identified

A 21-year-old North Kohala woman killed Friday in a car crash on Akoni Pule Highway (Route 270) near the 12-mile marker was identified by Big Island police as Kristyl K. Sasaki of Kapa'au.

Police said Sasaki was driving a 1992 Toyota two-door sedan north on Akoni Pule Highway when the car crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road and overturned. Sasaki, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle.

Sasaki's death was the Big Island's 16th traffic fatality this year, compared with 20 on the same date in 2004.



Woman breaks leg at surfing spot

Emergency Medical Service paramedics and firefighters from the Hawai'i Kai station assisted a 19-year-old woman yesterday who suffered a broken leg at China Wall near Koko Kai Park. The injury was reported at 4:16 p.m. The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.



Rescuers bring hikers out safely

Honolulu Fire Department rescue specialists located and escorted two lost hikers to safety last night from the 'Aiea Loop Trail at Keaiwa Heiau State Park.

HFD spokesman Capt. Emmit Kane said the hikers were not injured. Fire Rescue 2 responded to the 8:09 p.m. alarm.



Bash at the Bush set for June 25

The second annual Bash at the Bush at One'ula (Hau Bush) Park in 'Ewa Beach will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 25.

The drug- and alcohol-free event will feature entertainment, food, crafts, children's games and public service booths. Sponsors include 'Ewa Beach Lions Club, Haseko Hawaii, Grace Pacific, Gentry Homes Ltd. and Campbell Estate.

Patriot Walk/Run scheduled July 2

The second annual 'Ewa Beach Patriot Walk/Run will be held July 2. The walk/run starts at the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai'i Hale Pono Clubhouse at 91-884 Fort Weaver Road. For information about the event, call 689-4281.



Curb work means lane closures

Eleven roads on O'ahu will have lane closures this week as contractors modify curbing, stripe pavement and do other work to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The lane closures will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In the downtown area, affected roads are Vineyard Boulevard from Palama Street to Queen Emma Street; and Pali Highway from School Street to Waokanaka Street.

In East O'ahu, affected roads are Kalaniana'ole Highway from Lunalilo Home Road to 'Ainakoa Avenue; Wai'alae Avenue from Kilauea Avenue to 17th Avenue; Kapi'olani Boulvard from Kapahulu Avenue to Waiaka Road; Harding Avenue from 2nd Avenue to Kapi'olani Boulevard; and Koko Head Avenue at Pahoa Avenue.

In Windward O'ahu, affected roads are Kehekili Highway from Kulukeoe Street to Ha'iku Road; Farrington Highway at Kahui Street; Pali Highway from Auloa Road to Ko'olau Farmers Garden; and Kalaniana'ole Highway from Pali Highway to Nakini Street.
