Lanikai edges Kailua in OHCRA

By Brandon Masuoka
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAILUA — Lanikai Canoe Club survived a scare to remain unbeaten in O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association racing at the King Kamehameha Regatta yesterday at Kailua Beach.

The Lanikai senior men paddle to a first-place finish in the 1.5-mile race. Lanikai won the regatta, 90-89.

Lanikai rallied past Kailua Canoe Club by winning the final race of the day, 90-89, and claimed its second consecutive victory since the start of the OHCRA season last week.

"We know the other teams are coming up," said Lanikai head coach Kalani Irvine, whose team edged Kailua, 73-70, last week. "It will be close all year. I don't expect anyone to run away with it."

Hui Lanakila Canoe Club finished third with 62 points followed by Outrigger Canoe Club (35) and Hui Nalu (31).

Waimanalo scored 13 points to win the A Division for clubs with 17 crews or fewer.

The outcome of yesterday's daylong regatta — which featured 17 clubs and more than 2,000 competitors — wasn't decided until Lanikai defeated Kailua in the men's 40 division, the 37th and final race of the day.

Leading 86-85 entering the final 1-mile race, Kailua's chances were hurt with a wide final turn.

Lanikai's men's 40 crew of Brad Cole, Pete Roney, Pat Erwin, John Foti, Irvine and David Smith won in 7 minutes and 44.06 seconds. The crew received five points for the victory. Kailua finished second at 7:51.86 and earned three points.

"This is what racing is all about," Kailua head coach Jimmy Bruhn said. "It was good fun out there. Hopefully we can improve and eke out these close ones."

Yesterday's race was the first of the season for Lanikai's men's 40 team, which skipped last week's race.

"We scratched it last week," Irvine said. "We didn't have all our guys registered yet."

Yesterday, Irvine said he was not aware that his club was trailing by one point entering the final race, and added "it didn't matter, our strategy was set. All we tried to do was the best we could."

Lanikai steersman Foti said he "had no idea" of the club's victory until he returned to the beach.

"It just happened to come out in our favor," Foti said. "Since we didn't know the score, it was a light race, it was fun ... it made it a much better race for us."

Lanikai and Kailua each won 11 races yesterday. Lanikai was paced by its boys and men crews which won eight races: the boys 15, 16, and 18 divisions, and the men's novice B, freshman, sophomore, junior and senior divisions.

"It was just the overall club, it was just consistency," Irvine said. "A lot of our crews placed."

Kailua flexed its muscles in the mixed divisions, winning four titles: the mixed 12, novice B, 40, and men and women divisions.

"We went for the mixed races this week," Bruhn said. "That was our strategy, and hopefully we could do well in other races. But Lanikai's tough."

Yesterday's outcome may have been different if not for a disqualification by Kailua in the boys 18 race that cost the club two points. Kailua finished third in that race, but was penalized for interfering with another canoe on a turn.

"We just have to be consistent, and not get DQ'd," Bruhn said. "Everybody gets DQ'd, but we have to limit our mistakes."

Lanikai led by as many as 12 points (70-58) after 26 races, but Kailua refused to fold. Kailua won four of the next 10 races, and took an 86-85 lead behind its third-place finish in the women's 40 division, setting the stage for the final race.

Both Kailua and Lanikai practice at Kailua Beach, and held the upper hand yesterday.

"This is kind of our home beach," Irvine said. "Our practice site is around the corner, about a half-mile down the road. We're pretty good rivals. We're very familiar with these waters."

Added Foti: "I personally don't put much stock on how you do in the early regattas. Everybody is testing and probing. You never know who is going to pull out aces down the road. Usually everybody does."

Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a event postponed

The Lokahi Regatta outrigger canoe races scheduled for yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon were postponed because of concerns that participants might be stung or bitten by mysterious marine organisms.

Several paddlers sustained stings or bites during regattas held at Ke'ehi Lagoon the past two weeks. Officials from the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a paddling organization voted yesterday to cancel yesterday's regatta.

More than 1,000 paddlers had been expected to participate.

Organizers will meet tomorrow to decide when the regatta will be rescheduled.
