University of Hawai'i senior right-handed pitcher Ricky Bauer said yesterday he has agreed with the San Francisco Giants to sign as an undrafted free agent.
"I'm pretty excited right now," said Bauer, who was drafted out of Mid-Pacific Institute in 2001 in the 39th round by the Boston Red Sox but opted to play for UH.
Bauer said the Giants had shown interest in him so he wasn't surprised they called Saturday.
"I gave them a verbal commitment," he said.
Bauer leaves tonight for Scottsdale, Ariz., for training camp for recent signees. He said he will sign the contract there.
Bauer was 4-4 with a 5.52 earned run average this season for the Rainbows. He struck out 31 and walked 17 in 60¡ innings. Of his 19 appearances, 10 were starts.
Meanwhile, UH junior second baseman Isaac Omura, picked in the 17th round by the Oakland Athletics, canceled his scheduled trip to the Cape Cod League, said his father, C.J. Omura. He was supposed to have left yesterday. The Athletics are slated to meet with Omura today or tomorrow.
