Earthquake poses no tsunami threat

An earthquake off the coast of northern California today generated a tsunami advisory for Hawai'i, but officials said there is no destructive tsunami threat to the state.Some coastal areas in Hawai'i could see small sea level changes and strong or unusual currents beginning about 9:30 tonight, according to information from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. Such effects could last several hours, officials said.
The West Coast-Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning and watch for other parts of the Pacific.
Officials said a magnitude 7.4 earthquake was reported at 4:51 p.m. Hawai'i time at 41.3 degrees north and 125.7 degrees west.
