Forecast looks good for hiring

Honolulu-area employers expect to hire at a vigorous pace during the third quarter, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey released today.

From July to September, 40 percent of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while none expect to reduce their payrolls, according to Manpower representative Valarie Cesar. Another 60 percent expect to maintain current staff levels.

For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in construction, nondurable goods manufacturing, transportation /public utilities, wholesale/retail trade, finance/insurance/real estate, education, services and public administration. Hiring in durable goods manufacturing is expected to remain unchanged.

Tycoon lectures June 23 at UH

Real estate investment tycoon Samuel Zell is scheduled to present the 13th Kipapa i ke Ala Lecture June 23, sponsored by the University of Hawai'i College of Business.

Zell will deliver the address, titled "Entrepreneurship and Ethics," from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the UH Campus Center Ballroom.
