Hilo man held in crystal meth case

Acting on a tip, police officers with the East Hawai'i Ice Task Force and the Criminal Intelligence Unit arrested a 21-year-old Hilo man suspected of selling drugs.

Police said they watched as Matthew Hoshide-Andrade met another man Thursday in a University of Hawai'i-Hilo parking lot. When officers approached the suspect, he reportedly fled in his vehicle, heading north on Kino'ole Street before losing control of his car and running onto a private lawn on Lanihuli Street, police said.

Hoshide-Andrade allegedly got out of the car, threw a bag into the bushes and attempted to drive off but didn't get far because of a flat tire, according to police. He was arrested at a nearby service station. Police said the bag contained 57.2 grams of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of more than $5,000. Officers also seized $1,020 in cash.

Crash victim died of heart attack

Big Island police reported yesterday that a 65-year-old man involved in a one-car wreck Sunday on Waikoloa Road died of a heart attack, not from injuries.

An autopsy determined that Paul Wrigglesworth of Waiko-loa suffered a heart attack before his westbound 1989 Mazda two-door sedan ran off the road at 9:15 p.m. He was pronounced dead an hour later at North Hawai'i Community Hospital.

California official will lead park

The National Park Service has named Marilyn H. Parris as the new superintendent at Haleakala National Park, officials said yesterday.

Parris succeeds Don Reeser, who is retiring July 23.

Parris is currently superintendent at Lassen Volcanic National Park in California, where she has managed emerging resource programs, including natural fire and invasive species management, since 1997. She is a native of South Carolina.

Parris is expected to start in October. Ron Nagata, resource management chief at Haleakala, will serve as interim superintendent.

Reeser has headed the Maui park since 1988 and has worked for the National Park Service for more than 40 years. His past postings included serving as a ranger, resource manager, ecologist and watershed rehabilitation chief at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Parks and Redwood National Park in California.

USS Chung-Hoon rescues voyager

A Pearl Harbor-based destroyer rescued a San Francisco man whose nine-year quest to sail solo around the world ended when his boat became disabled last week.

A helicopter from the USS Chung-Hoon took William Peterson, 56, to San Diego yesterday. On Saturday the destroyer picked up Peterson about 800 miles off the California coast. On Friday the mast of his 40-foot sailboat broke in rough seas and Peterson activated his satellite distress signal.

A Coast Guard C-130 airplane out of Sacramento, Calif., spotted Peterson and guided the Chung-Hoon to his position.
