STATEWIDE

5 school pools to be upgraded

The state will make improvements to swimming pool drainage systems at five public high schools in the coming year.

Water from pools at Roosevelt, Kalani, Kaiser, Wai'anae and Kaua'i high schools is discharged directly into adjacent waterways or a municipal drainage system that leads to a waterway. The chlorine in the pool water can be toxic to organisms in streams and coastal waters.

The improvements, which will cost a total of $1,291,000, will connect each pool to a municipal sewer system or a leach field system.
