Maui beaches closed again after shark sightings
Advertiser Staff
HONOLUA, Maui County and state officials today closed Honolua and Mokule'ia bays on Maui's northwestern shoreline for a second day because of sharks that continue to feed on dead akule left behind by fishermen.Warning signs were posted at D.T. Fleming Beach Park, where swimmers are being allowed into the water.
Maui County water safety officer Archie Kalepa said it likely the two beaches will remain closed tomorrow as six blacktip and tiger sharks up to 12 feet in length linger at Honolua Bay.
The sharks have been spotted there over the past couple of days feeding on the akule about 50 to 100 feet from shore.
Department of Land and Natural Resources officials are investigating why the fish were left in the water and hope to talk to the fishing boat operator involved in the incident.
