Filipino Idols are here

It's the "Return of the Champions" as seven Filipino singers end their U.S. tour that included stops in Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Also known as the Filipino Idols, the roster of young performers consists of Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Ann Go, Mark Bautista, Frenchie Dy, Christian Bautista, Sheryn Regis and Raymond Manalo. A2C, RJ and Giselle also perform.

Before the concert, the singers will be at a meet-and-greet for picture-taking and autograph-signing. The event includes a prime-rib dinner buffet and entertainment by Jon Basebase. Around the house

The 28th annual Home and Garden show continues through the Father's Day weekend with tips and tricks on gardening, home building, remodeling and designing. New home and garden tools and appliances are featured, as well as cooking demonstrations using the latest kitchen gadgets.

It's all about the brews

Get a taste of microbrews from the Pacific Northwest (Deschutes Brewery, Full Sail Brewing Co., MacTarnahan's Brewing, Rogue Ales and Pyramid Breweries) at this month's Hops and Grinds beer-tasting event. There will also be a pupu buffet and a drawing for a trip for two to Portland, Ore.

Three days of Gay Pride events

The 16th annual Honolulu Gay Pride celebration kicks off on Thursday for a rainbow of activities over three full days. Sponsored by The Center, this year's theme is "Aloha Through Diversity." Part of the proceeds benefit The Center's LGBTIQ scholarship fund.

The bash gets started with a Mr.-Ms.-Miss Gay Pride contest from 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday at Fusion Waikiki. A $10 donation at the door includes pupu, dancing and the show. Proceeds benefit the Imperial Court of All Hawai'i and The Center.

On June 24, the Pride Splash Beach Party gets under way 5 to 9 p.m. at the McCoy Pavilion; '80s pop icon Martha Wash will be on hand for a meet-and-greet from 7 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 advance or $40 at the door.

On June 25, the celebration gets an early start with the annual Pride Parade. From 9:30 to 11 a.m., the parade makes its way from Magic Island to Kapi'olani Park, via Kalakaua Avenue.

After the parade, the Pride Festival keeps the party going at McCoy Pavilion from noon to 9 p.m. with three stages of entertainment. On the 'Ewa stage, grand marshal Hina Wong performs an oli, followed by the Honolulu Men's Chorus. The Royal Hawaiian Band performs on the Highlight for the Town stage, and dance music rules the Diamond Head stage. Workshops, a youth pride idol contest, Honolulu Gay Pride Idol finals, dance and concert by Martha Wash round out the attractions. Leikia Williams emcees. Admission is $5.

After the festival, stay in party mode for the Pride Cruise, Boyz on the Bay. DJ Marz provides the sounds with both decks open for grooving. Roundtrip bus transportation from Waikiki is $10. Boarding starts at 9:30 p.m. at Aloha Tower.

The forms of art

It's time again for Bank of Hawaii Free Sunday, and this month's theme is Sculpture: Fantastic Forms. Learn about abstract sculpture at this family-friendly event, with festivities that include a gallery hunt, storytime with Barnes & Noble, music by Paradise XS, a butoh dance performance by Tangentz and art activities. The Honolulu Advertiser is a sponsor.

Cruising for a concert

Final weekend at Aloha Stadium

The annual 50th State Fair winds down this weekend after four weekends of fun for all. Besides this year's new attractions (the Skyscraper, Speedway and Spring Ride), the festival also features an auto show, food, games and special events each day:

From 7 to 11 p.m. today, youths ages 12-18 are invited to come out for the 4th annual 808 Teen Zone Summer Dance Party. Sponsored by MADD-Hawai'i, the dance fest features hot hits, door prizes and an alcohol-free time. Admission is $5.

From noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i sponsors a Japanese Cultural Fair. Among the offerings will be traditional dances and martial-arts demonstrations. There will be interactive bon dance performances where the audience can learn the dance steps; and make-n-takes of Japanese crafts for children.

From 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday, the Hawaiian Scottish Association hosts Highlands Culture Day. Festivities include bagpipers, dancing, athletics, children's games, displays, entertainment, food and fencing. Also on Sunday, catch Arsenio the band at 7 and 10 p.m.

American Idol finalist LaToya London helps wrap up the fair as part of the Ohana Hotels and Resorts concert series. Koa'uka opens on Saturday, and Fiji closes on Sunday. Concerts start at 8 p.m. each day.

Time to get your salsa on at Salsathon 2005:

Tonight, get a preview with the upbeat music of California visitors Conjunto Alegre and dance troupe LA Salsa Kids.

You're in for a hot and spicy time at the main event, the 5th annual Puerto Rican Cultural and Salsa Festival. The Salsathon features out-of-town guests Luisito Rosario, Conjunto Alegre and Nova; and local salsa sounds by El Conjunto Tropical, Tommy Valentine y Sus Amigos and Son Caribe. Edie The Salsa Freak and Al "Liquid Silver" of California will host salsa workshops and performances, along with Son D'Hawaii, Dream to Dance, Aloha Rumberos and more. Other performers include George Garcia and K'ai Roberts and LA Salsa Kids. There's food, a silent auction, party jumpers, arts and crafts and product booths, too.

Not-so-distant drummers

Waipahu gets ready to rumble when the Hawai'i Plantation Village hosts the "Rhythm of the Islands" percussion festival. The festival features percussion instruments from Hawai'i's various plantation cultures, including the taiko, performed by the renowned Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble. After his performance, Endo will lead two half-hour hands-on taiko sessions. Also appearing will be the Honbushin International Drummers and the Saint Louis high school Philippine heritage club. The 53rd Cherry Blossom Festival court will be on hand to present an exhibit on taiko and help with a drum-making activity. Miss Hawaii 2005 also makes an appearance.
