DANCE: June 24-25

The King Kamehameha celebrations continue with the 32nd annual King Kamehameha Hula Competition. This international event features 17 halau from O'ahu, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Kanagawa. Tickets range from $8.50 to $20.

FILM FESTIVAL: June 24-July 1

Forty films from around the world (including "Mauna Kea — Temple Under Siege") will be screened at the 4th annual Cinema Paradise Film Festival, which now has its own venue, called Next Door, at 43 N. Hotel St. Opening night also features a party featuring J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science (11 p.m.), closing night's party features DJ Coop D'ville (9 p.m.) and there are other musical events and a Youth Media Workshop in between. STAGE: July 1-24

The third annual Hawaii Shakespeare Festival takes on the theme "Winter into Summer" and kicks off with "A Winter's Tale." Directed by R. Kevin Doyle, this tragedy-comedy follows a lost princess who is raised by a shepherd. The other plays to be performed during the festival are "Romeo and Juliet" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Season tickets for all three shows are $42. Tickets for individual performances are $18 general, $16 seniors and military, $14 groups of 10 or more and $10 students.

FESTIVAL: July 1-4

It's a hot holiday weekend of music, carnival rides, watersports and fireworks at BayFest 2005. This four-day event honors military members with a concert each night featuring recording artists Papa Roach (July 1), Montgomery Gentry (July 2), Brad Paisley (July 3) and Lynyrd Skynyrd (July 4). Other festivities include the Island Lifestyle Expo, Coconut Island boat rides, midway and carnival rides, fitness challenge, car shows, dunk tank and military static displays. Admission is $10 general, $7.50 ages 4-10 and $8 groups of 20 or more.

COMEDY: July 1

Breakthrough comic Charlie Murphy and friends from the Comedy Central hit "Chappelle's Show" extend the laughter from the TV to the stage. Presented by The Laugh Factory, Charlie Murphy is the older brother of famed actor-comedian Eddie Murphy. Also a successful Hollywood screenwriter and actor, Murphy is best known for his "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories" sketches that recount his adventures as a former bodyguard for his brother. Tickets: $30, $40 and $50.

CELEBRATIONS: July 3, 4

Make the July 4th holiday last a little longer with a pre-Independence Day bash that includes entertainment on multiple stages, cotton candy and popcorn, face and hair painting and a balloon artist. The event also includes a fashion show with local models, the Roosevelt cheerleaders and strolling entertainers. The evening's highlight will be a vibrant fireworks display over Honolulu Harbor at 8:45 p.m. Admission is free.

Or celebrate on the actual Independence Day at Ala Moana Center. There's entertainment noon-6 p.m. Centerstage; a pre-fireworks concert 6-8:30 p.m. that includes The Makaha Sons, Go Jimmy Go and Eight O Eight; and fireworks over Magic Island at 8:30 p.m.

CONCERT: July 9

The 4th annual Guitars Under the Stars jazz festival lights up the North Shore with the sounds of Grammy award winner Chuck Mangione. "The Feeling's Back" with the upbeat pop and bop jazz of international recording artist Mangione. The night includes telescopes for stargazers, food, beverages and a fireworks show. Tickets are $30 advance and $35 at the door.

FAMILY TIES: July 9

Whee, it's time for ArtSpree! The Contemporary Museum's annual open house is a full day of contemporary visual arts, art-related activities, hands-on participation, demonstrations and performances. The museum galleries showcase the biennial exhibition of Hawai'i artists, including Charles Cohan, Sergio Goes, Claudia Johnson, Jacqueline Rush Lee, Michael Lee, Michael Marshall and Christopher Reiner. Admission and parking are free. A free shuttle service will run between the museum and Punahou School.

BOOK SALE: July 9-16

More than 100,000 books will be offered at the 58th annual Friends of the Library of Hawai'i sale, left, a tradition that draws the book lovers in all of us. Expect to find books in every category and for every age, CDs, videos, DVDs, records, books on tape and collectible books, too. Members of the Friends of the Library get a special preview, 5:30-7:30 p.m. July 8. Other specials: fiction and records at half price, July 11; seniors 60 and older receive a 25 percent discount, July 12; 50 percent discount for Friends of the Library members, July 13; 25 percent off if you show your Hawai'i library card, July 14; everything at half price, July 15; and all items at 50 cents each or two paperbacks for 50 cents, July 16.

Admission is free. Volunteers are needed, too.

STAGE: July 15-31

Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" goes from the big screen to the stage as Diamond Head Theatre closes its 90th anniversary season. Based on the Academy Award-winning animated movie, characters Belle, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Chip and others sing and dance through this tale as old as time. David Spangenthal guest-directs and plays the role of the Beast; Shawna Masuda is Beauty. Tickets are $12-$42 general, with discounts for students, seniors 62 and older and military.

BUZZING ABOUT

A la the Beatles

"Help! The Homeless" is the title of a concert featuring BeatleMania Live, Still Surfin', Surfjam, Wasabi, Vaihi, Juke Joint and H2O July 2 at the Waikiki Shell. Doors open at 4 p.m.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army's homeless-relief efforts. Tickets — $18-$50 — are available at Ticketmaster outlets and the Blaisdell box office. (877) 750-4400, ticketmaster.com.

Prince Lot Hula July 16

Poncho Sanchez tickets

Head for tomorrow's Salsathon at McCoy Pavilion for a one-day advance sale of tickets for the Sept. 17 Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band concert, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Andrews amphitheater. Otherwise you'll have to wait until Aug. 22 to get tickets, which will be $25 general, $20 military, seniors, students, UH faculty/staff, $15 for UH-Manoa students. Get general admission tickets tomorrow at $20.
