Driver killed in 2-car crash

One person was killed and another injured in a two-car crash last night in Wahiawa.

The incident happened about 10:40 p.m. on Kamehameha Highway near the main gate to Wheeler Army Air Field. Police said one vehicle rear-ended another in the northbound lanes and that the force of the collision left the two vehicles in the southbound lanes.

When ambulance personnel arrived, they said the driver of one car was in extremely critical condition. That person was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital and died.

The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Police traffic investigators were at the scene late last night to look into the cause of the crash.



Car hits man crossing road

A 52-year-old homeless man was critically injured yesterday morning when he was hit by a car while trying to cross Vineyard Boulevard near 'A'ala Street.

Traffic investigators said the man was going from the mauka to the makai side of Vineyard outside a crosswalk and against the red light about 2:25 a.m. when he was hit by a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am traveling 'ewa-bound on Vineyard.

The pedestrian was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with head injuries and was listed in critical condition.

The motorist, a 25-year-old Pearl Harbor man, and his 22-year-old passenger were not hurt.



Sewage spillsinto stream

State health officials posted warning signs along Waiawa Stream yesterday after an estimated 1,100 gallons of untreated sewage overflowed from a manhole Wednesday night near Pearl Highlands Center.

The spill was reported about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. City workers found the 8-inch-diameter pipe blocked by rocks, rags and grease. They removed the obstructions and the pipe was back in service by 11:30 p.m.

Officials said people should avoid the area. Water samples will be analyzed to assess the effect of the spill.



Bay restoration meeting July 13

The state Department of Health is seeking community input to identify and address pollution problems in Kahana Bay. A public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. July 13 at the Kahana Community Center at Kahana State Park, 52-222 Kamehameha Highway.

Kahana Bay has been designated for federal restoration efforts through the Clean Water Act and the University of Hawai'i's Environmental Center will work with the community to gather information on water quality problems and environmental objectives for the watershed.

Aquatic center pools reopen

PUKALANI, Maui — Filter repairs have been completed and the pools at the Upcountry Aquatic Center have reopened, the Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday; and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.



Cultural center officer on board

Allicyn Hikida Tasaka has joined the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i staff as its chief operating officer.

Tasaka, most recently executive director of Hawai'i Meals on Wheels, will help manage the center's overall operations and administration, said Riki May Amano, the center's president and executive director. Tasaka previously was executive director for the Hawai'i State Commission on the Status of Women and chairwoman of the Hawai'i Women's Coalition.

Tasaka also served on the Hawai'i Civil Rights Commission and the Hawai'i State Commission on the Status of Women and was president of the Japanese American Citizens League, Honolulu chapter.



Woman fends off purse-snatchers

A 22-year-old woman told police that two men tried to rob her Wednesday night as she was walking home from a grocery store in Makiki.

The woman told investigators two strangers approached her about 8 p.m. and tried to take her purse. One man hit her on the head several times with a wrench but she refused to let go of the bag, she said.

The would-be robbers ran away.

Police said the woman suffered head and face injuries but refused medical treatment.



Boy beaten, man arrested

A Makaha man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly forced his way into the home of a boy whom he believed had stolen several items from him.

Police said the man assaulted the boy about 1 p.m. before taking back his property, causing injuries to the boy's ribs and face.
