Shimozaki and Miyajima qualify

Mariko Shimozaki of Kihei and Kaitlen Miyajima of Wailuku earned berths in the 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship yesterday in a qualifier at Kapalua's Bay Course.

Shimozaki, a 2001 Seabury Hall graduate who recently completed her senior season at the University of San Francisco, shot a 5-over-par 77. Miyajima shot a 78.

The four alternates are: Lori Planos of Kapalua (79), Kelly Nakashima of Wailuku (79), Kyung Kim of Wailuku (80) and Elyse Okada of Kahului (80).

The national tournament will be played July 11 to 16 at Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo.



Retailers' tournament supports education

The seventh annual Retail Invitational Golf Tournament will be held Friday at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club in 'Ewa Beach.

The event supports educational programs of the Retail Merchants of Hawaii.

Participants can win prizes in closest-to-the-pin and long-drive contests. In the hole-in-one contest, golfers will be eligible to win $5,000 for themselves, plus another $5,000 for the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, a non-profit that provides assistance to visitors in need.

The entry fee is $425 for a threesome and $150 for a single player. Tee sponsorships are $575 and include a threesome as well as three tickets for the hole-in-one contest. Lunch, snacks and a dinner are included.

Check-in time is 10:30 a.m. with an 11:30 shotgun start. An awards banquet will begin at 5:30 p.m.
