• How Hawai'i nonprofit organizations can advocate more effectively and deal with critical issues affecting all charities will be the focus of the June 30 inaugural conference of the HAWAI'I ALLIANCE OF NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. The group is a new association of nonprofit organizations with statewide and sector-wide membership, already exceeding 100 nonprofits. Keynote speaker for the event, scheduled for the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel, will be Michael Weekes, president of the affiliated National Council of NonProfit Organizations, who will be speaking on "The Power of Associations." Also planned is a morning workshop, "Critical Issues for Nonprofit Organizations," and an afternoon panel discussion, "Hawai'i Nonprofit Advocacy: The Shape of Things to Come." • From old "dial" telephones to today's information transport systems, there remains one constant: the need for trained technicians and designers. Representatives of one of the leading organizations in telecommunications training and certification — for everything from designers, installers, technicians and end-users — will take part in Wednesday's luncheon program of the HAWAII TELECOMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION. Participating will be John Adams, registered technician for BICSI, and 33-year telecommunications veteran. BICSI is a not-for-profit, nonvendor-aligned telecommunications organization providing training and certification.
