Kane'ohe still perfect in Hui Wa'a

For Kane'ohe Canoe Club, a Father's Day celebration wouldn't be complete without family.

Kane'ohe celebrated after winning the senior women master's division. Kane'ohe captured the regatta at Ma'ili Beach Park yesterday.

Kane'ohe made sure of that, counting on its family of more than 200 paddlers to win its third consecutive regatta of the Na 'Ohana Hui Wa'a season yesterday at Ma'ili Beach Park.

Kane'ohe set two course records at the 'Alapa Hoe Canoe Club Regatta and finished with 75 points followed by Manu O Ke Kai with 68 points. Lokahi and Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i tied for third place with 52 points each.

"It was a good Father's Day for everybody," said Kane'ohe head coach Clint Anderson, whose son, Keoni and daughter, Kahealani, combined to win three races yesterday. "This is what it's all about. Paddling bonds a lot of families."

A total of 17 clubs from around O'ahu participated in yesterday's regatta that drew more than 1,000 paddlers.

Yesterday's regatta was the organization's first since an invasion of tiny, stinging jellyfish at Ke'ehi Lagoon forced the cancellation of last week's regatta, and prompted race officials to relocate to Ma'ili.

Apparently, the one-week layoff did little to slow Kane'ohe which won eight of the 36 races yesterday despite a strong outward current at Ma'ili.

"It's a more balanced race at Ke'ehi," Anderson said. "You can win from lane 1 to 12. When you go to open ocean, it's the luck of the draw."

Five Ma'ili Beach Park course records were broken yesterday.

Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i set a record in the boys 14-under division at 1 minute and 49.09 seconds (breaking its own record of 1:50.22 in 1994). Kane'ohe set records in the mixed novice B division at 1:52.17 (old record of 1:52.57 set by Kalihi Kai in 2001), and the boys 18-under division at 7:47.29 (old record, 7:47.83, Lokahi, 1996). The Waikiki Beach Boys broke records in the women sophomore division at 8:22.34 (old record, 8:39.69, Lokahi, 1999) and women senior division at 12:44.57 (old record, 13:09.20, Lokahi, 1999).

In yesterday's regatta, Kane'ohe wasted little time by pouncing on the competition early.

After holding a slim five-point lead after 10 races, Kane'ohe scored 40 points over the next 14 races to take a 71-39 lead over Manu O Ke Kai. During that span, Kane'ohe won five races and finished fourth or better in every one but two races.

Manu O Ke Kai mounted a rally in the final 12 races, outscoring Kane'ohe, 29-4, but could not overcome the deficit.

Manu O Ke Kai in the foreground returns to the beach following its victory in the mixed golden 55-plus division. Manu O Ke Kai won eight races yesterday and finished second to Kane'ohe in a Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a regatta at Ma'ili Beach Park.
"We came close today," said Manu O Ke Kai golden masters paddler Marilyn Schoenke. "We really did well in the second half today. We'll keep trying."

As usual, Kane'ohe's youth crews helped score points, winning five of 13 youth races.

"The key was everyone bringing in points between the adults and kids," Anderson said. "You don't have to win all the races, but you just have to keep plugging away."

Koa Kai won three races and scored 46 points to win the AA Division for "medium sized clubs," followed by 'Alapa Hoe with 18 points and Ka Mamalahoe with 13.

The Waikiki Beach Boys won five races and scored 31 points to win the A Division for "small sized clubs."

Hui Wa'a vice president Tambry Young yesterday said the organization will not host any races at Ke'ehi Lagoon until the jellyfish situation is resolved. Next week's regatta will be at Kailua Beach, followed by another regatta either at Kane'ohe Bay, Hale'iwa, Waimanalo, or nearby Sand Island, she said.

At least four canoe clubs practice at Ke'ehi Lagoon, including Hui Wa'a members 'Alapa Hoe, Kalihi Kai and Ka Mamalahoe along with O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association's Keola O Ke Kai.

Young said the organization voted to not make-up last week's regatta, but that decision is still under discussion by officials.

'Alapa Hoe head coach Daniel Sanford said the stinging jellyfish has forced his club to engage in more non-water related activities.

"I try to take as much precautions as I can," Sanford said. "I have them rinse off, or do more running or calisthenics. But you still need boat time in the water. It showed today. Our kids were a little rusty."
