Flower sales down 1% in '04

Sales of Hawai'i flower and nursery products dipped 1 percent to $94.5 million last year, the Hawai'i Agriculture Statistics Service reported yesterday. Foliage and potted flowering plants posted higher sales while cut flower sales declined. Anthuriums remained the leading cut flower with value of sales pegged at $4.7 million.
Hawai'i County growers accounted for 53 percent of the total wholesale value of flowers and nursery products sold statewide in 2004.
Hawaii Pacific Health has begun implementing an electronic medical records system that will allow sharing of patient information among doctors at its network of four hospitals and 20 ambulatory care clinics on O'ahu and Kaua'i.
The new integrated patient record system includes state-of-the-art patient safety systems to reduce medical errors, the organization said. Physicians will have a comprehensive view of inpatient and outpatient data that starts with an office visit, an emergency-room visit or hospital admission.
On O'ahu, Hawaii Pacific Health runs Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Kapi'olani Medical Center at Pali Momi, Kapi'olani Women's Center and Straub Clinic & Hospital. On Kaua'i, its facilities include Wilcox Memorial Hospital and Kaua'i Medical Center.
Mortgage lending firm Global One Lending LLC, based in Sacramento, Calif., has opened a Hawai'i branch office, which the company said should employ nearly 50 full- and part-time loan officers by the end of this month.
Global One was founded in 2001 and employs about 4,000 loan officers in California, Virginia and Nevada.
The company's Honolulu office is at 1132 Bishop St. Suite 200 and managed by Charles Degala, a longtime Hawai'i tourism industry executive and former loan manager with Summit Lending of Hawaii.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development yesterday introduced five, 20-minute computer-based modules to help potential homeowners understand the homebuying process.
The modules, which allow a self-paced learning experience, are: The ABCs of Homebuying, Elevate Your Credit, Easy to Understand Mortgage Programs, Where to Find the Homeownership Money You Need, and Ten Homeownership Facts That Will Save You Thousands. The modules have been launched on www.hud.gov and espanol.hud.gov.
