Boy who survived fall returns home

A young boy who survived a four-story fall from a Wahiawa apartment building was released from the hospital last night.

Scott Henry Toilolo Jr. was treated for a broken left leg and cuts at The Queen's Medical Center after Saturday's accident.

Grandmother Luminada Natividad said the boy was bouncing on a bed next to a window when he pushed against the window screen, which gave way. He landed on the concrete below.

Scott turns 2 years old July 3.

Four months ago, a 2-year-old girl was injured when she fell through an aluminum railing on the fourth floor of a Nu'uanu residential apartment building. She has since recovered.



Spouse pleads not guilty to murder

A 50-year-old Kapahulu man pleaded not guilty yesterday to a charge of murdering his wife by beating her with a hammer.

Circuit Judge Derrick Chan scheduled the trial for Tan Lam, also known as Danny Lam, for the week of Aug. 22.

Lam, a real-estate salesman who was being held on $500,000 bail, is accused of beating his wife, Melody, on June 11 in a bedroom of their Kapahulu home. A prosecutor said their 6-year-old son, one of their two children, apparently was in the room sleeping at the time.

Lam and his wife were agents for Dower Realty.



Beaches reopen after sharks leave

West Maui beaches were reopened yesterday after being closed for several days because of shark sightings.

The move came after county lifeguards and state Department of Land and Natural Resources officials surveyed Honolua Bay yesterday morning, officials said.

The bay and several others were first posted Wednesday after sharks were seen feeding on dead akule left behind by a fishing boat.

At least six sharks were counted, including several tiger sharks up to 12 feet long, department officials said initially.

More than 100 dead akule were found at Honolua Bay, leaving officials puzzled as to why the fish were left in the water.



Class of 1980 to hold 25th reunion

The Maui High School Class of 1980 will hold its 25th Reunion Weekend from Aug. 5 to 7, with a Saturday golf outing and dinner at the King Kamehameha Club House in Waikapu.

Man arrested in surfboard theft

A 34-year-old man was arrested Sunday night after he allegedly was found trying to steal surfboards from a board rental company in Waikiki.

Police said a witness called the company owner at about 11:55 p.m.

The owner told police he arrived at his shop near Koa and Uluniu avenues to find a man using a bolt cutter on the lock and cable that secure individual surfboards.

The owner detained the suspect until police arrived to arrest the man on suspicion of attempted second-degree theft.



Board chairman wins re-election

Bob Finley was re-elected chairman of the Waikiki Neighborhood Board at its monthly meeting June 14.

Louis Erteschik was elected vice chairman. Mike Peters Jr. was voted secretary and David Chun was elected treasurer.



Tax-hike plan to be discussed

A town meeting to discuss the proposed Honolulu general excise tax increase will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Waikiki Community Center auditorium, 310 Paoakalani Ave.

The meeting is sponsored by the Waikiki Residents Association. Elected officials will be present to discuss the tax increase.

The general excise tax proposal goes before the full City Council on July 6.



Filipinos in Isles topic of lecture

Domingo Los Banos, a World War II veteran, will talk about the Filipino people in Hawai'i today during a lecture at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Waikiki Community Center.

Los Banos will also discuss the immigration era, plantation camps and the customs of Filipinos.

The lecture costs $8.



Son, 27, allegedly threatened father

A 27-year-old man was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of threatening his 55-year-old father with a knife during an argument at the father's home on Lunalilo Home Road in Hawai'i Kai.

The son left the home after the 10 p.m. argument but was found later by East O'ahu police officers and arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening, police said.
