Kaho'olawe panel honors Machado

WAILUKU, Maui — Colette Machado, the longest-serving member of the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission, was honored yesterday at her final commission meeting. Her term expires June 30.

Machado, who also is an Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee from Moloka'i, has served on the commission since 1994, first on behalf of the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana and then as a representative of OHA.

"As a KIRC commissioner, Colette has given unconditionally of her time, experience and resources to the people of the state of Hawai'i and gone far beyond what is normally expected of a commissioner," said commission member Burt Sakada.

Machado's involvement with the protection and restoration of Kaho'olawe began more than 25 years ago as a member of the original Kaho'olawe activist group, Hui Ala Loa, on Moloka'i.



Drug-nuisance complaint filed

WAILUKU, Maui — The state has filed its fourth drug-nuisance abatement action on Maui, this time against a woman who allegedly sold drugs from her Wailuku home.

Tiffany K. Anderson was served with the complaint yesterday and has been ordered by Maui Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza to stay away from the Hala Place property until a June 29 hearing at which the state is expected to ask the court to extend the prohibition. Anderson has 20 days to respond to the allegations in the complaint filed by the attorney general's Drug Nuisance Abatement Unit.

Anderson will be arraigned July 12 on charges of promoting a dangerous drug in the third degree and prohibited acts related to drug paraphernalia.



Suspect, 50, held after bank heist

WAILUKU, Maui — A 50-year-old man was under arrest yesterday following a Monday bank robbery in Wailuku.

The suspect, of no known address, was stopped by patrol officers and arrested within an hour of the 11 a.m. robbery of the American Savings Bank branch inside the Sack 'N Save Foods store. He was being held on a warrant for an unrelated parole violation, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the Maui Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division.

Police found the stolen cash and arrested two other men who were with the suspect, but they were released, Cuomo said.



'Howl's Moving Castle' a winner

WAILEA, Maui — "Howl's Moving Castle," the animated film by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, won the audience award for best feature at the Maui Film Festival.

Also named to the list of 2005 Maui Film Festival Starz Audience Award Winners were "March of the Penguins" as best documentary feature; "Our Time is Up" as best short film; the surfing movie "All Aboard the Crazy Train" as best documentary short; and "Joe Blow" as best animated short.

The awards were presented Sunday at the festival's closing party.



HAWAI'I KAI

Library parking lot will be closed

The Hawai'i Kai Public Library will close its parking lot and book drop on July 1 and 8 for repaving of the handicapped-accessible parking stall. The work is part of the library's ongoing repairs and includes Americans with Disabilities Act improvements, which should be completed in August.

The library will have special holiday hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 1. On July 8, the repaving of the parking stall will continue until completion. Library materials can be returned to other public libraries.



'AINA HAINA

Library media sale opens today

The 'Aina Haina Public Library's annual book, CD, record and video/audio tape sale begins today and runs through Saturday. The library is at 5246 Kalaniana'ole Highway.

Hours for the sale are 11 a.m. to 5 a.m. today through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Prices change from day to day with hardbacks costing $2 each and paperbacks $1 on Wednesday. On Thursday prices on hardbacks and paperbacks are reduced by 50 cents; on Friday the cost for hardbacks drops to $1 and paperbacks to 25 cents; and Saturday hardbacks will be 50 cents and paperbacks 10 cents. There also will be some individually priced special books available. From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday there will be a special $1 bag sale.

Proceeds from the sale go to benefit the 'Aina Haina Library.



KAUA'I

Olohena Bridge will be replaced

County officials will close Olohena Bridge mauka of Kapa'a Monday for demolition and replacement with a new structure.

Olohena Road will be closed between Hauiki and Ka'apuni roads. Drivers will need to find alternate routes during the four to five months the work will be done.



LANA'I

Education a topic for community

LANA'I CITY, Lana'i — A community meeting will be held Tuesday at the Lana'i High & Elementary School cafeteria to discuss "how to create a continuous learning experience from preschool to college and beyond."

Organizers said the meeting is open to parents, teachers, students, business leaders and others interested in student success.

The event, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., is being organized by United for Learning: Hawai'i's P-20 Initiative. The initiative is a partnership led by the Good Beginnings Alliance, the state Department of Education and the University of Hawai'i.

WAIALUA

Summer reading session on tap

The Waialua Public Library will continue its Summer Reading Program at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Waialua Bandstand in the Park.

The library, which has been undergoing renovations, opened again to the public today.

The Summer Reading Programs have normally taken place inside the library.

But city officials have given the library permission to hold this season's programs across the street at the bandstand, said librarian Tim Littlejohn.

The $400,000 bandstand recently celebrated its first anniversary.

In addition to entertainment, the programs include games, prizes, crafts and refreshments, said Littlejohn.

The Summer Reading Program ends on July 16.
