Robert Stuart, 85, retired Navy captain

Robert M. Stuart, a retired Navy captain, World War II veteran, golfer and educator, died May 25 in Honolulu. He was 85.

Stuart was born Feb 22, 1920, in Boston. He graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy in Pine Beach, N.J., and entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., graduating in 1942.

He saw extensive action in World War II in the Pacific theater within six months after graduation. Stuart served on cruisers and destroyers throughout his 30-year Navy career, including assignments as executive officer of USS Northampton and commanding officer of USS Basilone.

His early shore tours included an assignment at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, an assignment as a student at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., and an assignment as the special assistant to the undersecretary of the Navy.

In 1964, Stuart was transferred to Hawai'i to serve as commander of Destroyer Division 112. He stayed in Hawai'i as the 14th Naval District's chief of staff for logistics. He also served as president of the Pearl Harbor Little League.

Stuart finished his Navy assignments in Hawai'i as commanding officer of Naval Station Pearl Harbor from 1968 to 1970. His final tour was in Washington, D.C., as the executive assistant to the chief of Naval Training.

He retired from the Navy in 1972 as a captain and returned to Honolulu.

Stuart is survived by his wife, Lola; daughters, Paula and Betsy; a son, Bob II; Lola's sons Terry and Jon; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
