Queen's building outpatient center

The Queen's Medical Center broke ground yesterday on an 11,000-square-foot outpatient ambulatory center at the Hawai'i Kai Shopping Center.

The facility, which is being built on the vacant land next to the Cha Cha Salsaria, is expected to open in January. The outpatient ambulatory center will have up to six full-time doctors, diagnostic imaging services and rehab services. In addition, Queen's will have cardiac noninvasive care service. The center will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.



MAKAHA

Man, 48, arrested in shooting case

A 48-year-old Makaha man was arrested Tuesday night after he allegedly fired a rifle three times to scare a 25-year-old man who was arguing with the older man's sons.

The man who filed the complaint told police he was walking past a home on Kepue Street near Kepue Place about 11:25 p.m. when he got into an argument with the other man's sons. He said the father went into the home, returned with a rifle and threatened to shoot him.

He said the father then fired three shots into the air. A rifle and three spent cartridges were found, police said.

Board re-elects Grant Tanimoto

Grant Tanimoto was re-elected chairman of the Aliamanu/Salt Lake/Foster Village Neighborhood Board at its monthly meeting on June 9.

Len Pepper was elected vice chairman and Linda Mills was voted secretary and treasurer.



WAIKIKI

Pearl City man, boy face charges

A 22-year-old Pearl City man and a 17-year-old Waipahu boy were arrested in Waikiki Tuesday night after two women visitors from Japan reported their purses stolen.

The two women, ages 25 and 26, told police they were walking on a Waikiki sidewalk when the two men came from behind and grabbed their purses.

Police said the women called out for help and gave chase. Several people who saw what was happening also joined the chase.

Officers caught up with them a short time later. The man and the teen were arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft.



MAUI

Hamakuapoko looks for alumni

PA'IA, Maui — The Friends of Old Maui High School at Hamakuapoko are establishing an alumni database and mailing list.

More than 3,500 former students are listed, and organizers are looking for members of the classes of 1936, 1937, 1941, 1942, 1956, 1957, 1960, 1961, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972. Contact information can be sent to the Friends group at P.O. Box 792165, Pa'ia, HI 96779.

The nonprofit volunteer organization has been working for two years to restore the historic campus and clear debris and overgrown trees from the administration building, which was designed by noted Hawai'i architect Charles W. Dickey.



Maui Democrats host Californian

KAHULUI, Maui — U.S. Rep. Mike Honda, D-California, will be the guest of honor at a July 5 buffet luncheon sponsored by the Democratic Century Club of Maui.

The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Maui Beach Hotel in Kahului. Call John Sucich at (808) 878-3182 to purchase tickets, which are $25.



'EWA BEACH

Run to benefit boys/girls club

The second annual 'Ewa Beach Patriot Walk/Run will begin at 8:30 a.m. July 2 at the Hale Pono Boys and Girls Club, 91-884 Fort Weaver Road in 'Ewa Beach. The free event is open to the public.

Participants can choose either a one- or three-mile course and are encouraged to wear red, white and blue. Patriotic hats, scarves, flags and T-shirts will go on sale at 7:30 a.m. Check-in will start at 7:45 a.m.

Donations will benefit the Boys and Girls Club and HOSEF, a nonprofit organization that provides free computers and classes to club members and to low-income and at-risk youth.
