4 junior golfers qualify

Stephanie Kono, Mari Chun, Kimberly Kim and Kaitlen Miyajima earned their way into the 57th U.S. Golf Association Girls' Junior Championship in Tuesday's qualifier at Wailua Golf Course on Kaua'i.

Kono, who will be a sophomore at Punahou School in the fall, was medalist with a 72. Chun, heading to Stanford, and Kim, an incoming freshman at Waiakea High School, were a shot back. Miyajima won a playoff with two others, at 77, to advance.

Christine Kim and Britney Choy, the last two state high school champions, are first and second alternates.

This year's championship will be July 18 to 23 at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho.



KAYAKING

Six Hawai'i paddlers at U.S. sprint trials

Six kayak paddlers from Hawai'i will compete in the United States National Sprint Team Trials this weekend at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Eric Abbott, Kai Chong, Patrick Dolan and Cole Scott are in the junior division for paddlers 18 and younger.

Andy Bussey and Brandon Woods will compete in the senior division for paddlers 18 and older.

The races begin tomorrow and will run through Sunday.

The top paddlers at the trials will be selected to represent the United States at the world championship event in August.
