Fire contained on valley behind Kalani High School

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters report a 5-acre brush fire that burned on a valley behind Kalani High School in East O'ahu had been contained as of 4 p.m., and officials expected it would be extinguished by 5 p.m.

Eight units responded to the fire, including a chopper.

The fire came within 75 feet from some homes in the area, but none were under serious threat of fire.

Fire officials say they could not corroborate reports of an explosion, but said the fire burned near some power lines. A power outage was being reported by residents.

The fire was reported 1:36 p.m.
