The third annual Hawaii Shakespeare Festival takes is themed "Winter into Summer" and kicks off with "A Winter's Tale," left, featuring Brent Yoshikami as King Leontes. Directed by R. Kevin Doyle, this tragedy-comedy follows a lost princess who is raised by a shepherd. The other plays to be performed during the festival are "Romeo and Juliet" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Season tickets are $42. Tickets for individual performances are $18 general, $16 seniors and military, $14 groups of 10 or more and $10 students.

FESTIVAL: July 1-4
It's a hot holiday weekend of music, carnival rides, water sports and fireworks at BayFest 2005. This four-day event honors military members with a concert each night featuring recording artists Papa Roach (July 1), Montgomery Gentry (July 2), Brad Paisley (July 3) and Lynyrd Skynyrd (July 4). Other festivities include the Island Lifestyle Expo, Coconut Island boat rides, midway and carnival rides, fitness challenge, car shows, dunk tank and military static displays. Admission is $10 general, $7.50 ages 4-10 and $8 groups of 20 or more.

FAMILY TIES: July 9
Whee, it's time for ArtSpree! The Contemporary Museum's annual open house is a full day of contemporary visual arts, art-related activities, hands-on participation, demonstrations and performances. The museum galleries showcase the biennial exhibition of Hawai'i artists, including Charles Cohan, Sergio Goes, Claudia Johnson, Jacqueline Rush Lee, Michael Lee, Michael Marshall and Christopher Reiner. Admission and parking are free. A free shuttle service will run between the museum and Punahou School.

CONCERT: July 2
Take a walk down memory lane while helping the homeless at a benefit concert featuring the oldies tunes of Beatlemania Live, below, and Still Surfin'. Additional performers include Vaihi, H2O, Juke Joint, Wasabi and Surfjam. Angela Perez Baraquio hosts. Doors open at 4 p.m. Admission is $18 general, $30-$50 reserved ($5 of each ticket goes to the Salvation Army).

BOOK SALE: July 9-16
More than 100,000 books will be offered at the 58th annual Friends of the Library of Hawai'i sale, a tradition that draws the book lovers in all of us. Expect to find books in every category and for every age, CDs, videos, DVDs, records, books on tape and collectible books, too. Members of the Friends of the Library get a special preview, 5:30-7:30 p.m. July 8. Other specials: fiction and records at half price, July 11; seniors 60 and older receive a 25 percent discount, July 12; 50 percent discount for Friends of the Library members, July 13; 25 percent off if you show your Hawai'i library card, July 14; everything at half price, July 15; and all items at 50 cents each or two paperbacks for 50 cents, July 16. "Shine a Light on Lupus" at the Hawaii Lupus Foundation's annual fund-raiser twilight walk. This 1.8-mile course includes pre-walk festivities with registration, balloon fun and face painting at 4:30 p.m. Entertainment includes Guy Cruz, the Honolulu Boy Choir, below, and "Up and Coming Artists of 2005." Adult registration is $25, or $10 for children 12 and younger.

Baby boomers, get ready for an explosive night of music at "The Boomer's Summer Blast," featuring Vene Marie and The Score, right. Admission is $25 advance or $30 at the door, which includes one free drink. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

The award-winning Broadway musical "A Chorus Line" comes to the Castle Performing Arts Center in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the theater. The story: Hopefuls audition for a part in a play, while belting out such memorable tunes as "I Can Do That," "One" and "What I Did for Love." The cast includes Jade Stice, John Bryan, Jodi Leong and Patrick Torres. Marcelo Pacleb choreographs and Ron Bright directs. Tickets are $20 adults and $15 seniors, military and ages 13-18. Not recommended for those under 13.

The summer gets HOT when Hawaii Opera Theatre presents the Gilbert and Sullivan comedy "Pirates of Penzance." The swashbuckling crew includes Michael Gallup as Major General Stanley, Curt Olds as Pirate King, Jean Stillwell as Ruth and George Dyer as Frederick. Comic Frank DeLima, left, also has a featured role. Henry G. Akina directs. KCCN Bash tickets
Tickets are on sale for the KCCN FM100 Birthday Bash XV, July 29-30 at the Waikiki Shell. If you buy your lawn or terrace tickets before July 1, the price is $15 each night. On July 1, the tickets will be $19 lawn and $19.50 terrace per show. However, two-night packages are $27 lawn, $29 terrace at any time. Pool tickets are $26 each night. Stepping back in time
Return to the days of the Civil War at a "living history" event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 3 at the Koko Head rifle range. The Hawai'i Historic Arms Association is presenting its 9th annual Battle of Gettysburg Civil War Memorial Shoot. The event is free (donations accepted); bring ear plugs and eye protection. 395-6884.
