Heading to the theater this weekend? The movie industry hopes so. Movie attendance has been on a downward spiral for three years, dipping 8.1 percent from 2000 to 2004, according to the Motion Picture Association of America.
But DVD sales and rentals are doing just fine. Last year, Americans spent an average of 78 hours watching videos and DVDs, up 53 percent since 2000, says the MPAA. DVD sales and rentals soared 676.5 percent in that time, raking in $21 billion, says the Digital Entertainment Group.
