Clay runs, jumps to U.S. decathlon lead

CARSON, Calif. — Olympic silver medalist Bryan Clay won two events and held the lead after five events of the decathlon yesterday at the U.S. track and field championships at the Home Depot Center.

Clay, a 1998 Castle High graduate from Kane'ohe who now lives in Azusa, Calif., amassed 4,322 points. Ryan Harlan was second with 4,193 and Paul Terek third with 4,099. Tom Pappas, the 2003 world champion, underwent shoulder surgery a month ago, and is not competing this year.

Clay won the 100 meters (10.70 seconds) for 929 points and the long jump (24 feet, 5 inches) for 920 points. He finished third in the shot put (48-10) for 782 points, fifth in the high jump (6-9) for 859 points and eighth in the 400 (49.62) for 832 points.

Harlan won the shot put (52-10) and tied Chris Boyles in the high jump (6-11ý). Stephen Moore won the 400 in 48.21 seconds.

Following today's final five events — the 1500, 110-meter high hurdles, discus, javelin and pole vault — the top three decathletes will make the U.S. team for the world championships in Helsinki, Aug. 6 to 14.

Clay captured the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Games with 8,820 points.

He qualified for the Olympic team by winning the U.S. Trials with 8,660 points.
