Telcom outages traced to Kona

Wireless and landline calls between the Big Island, O'ahu and the Mainland were subject to outages from Thursday afternoon until 1 p.m. yesterday after a truck snagged overhead phone lines in Kona.

The incident at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday on Mamalahoa Highway reduced Hawaiian Telcom's capacity to route calls between the Big Island and Honolulu, said Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman Ann Nishida. Most of the service was restored by 9:30 a.m. yesterday and emergency 911 calls were not affected, she said.
