The Advertiser's public service award, the biggest trophy of the night, honored the newspaper's staff for stories about Hawai'i's aging population. Judges praised the reporting as complete and thorough with "compelling stories of real people" and a great use of statistics and graphics.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin won 10 first-place awards, and Honolulu Magazine took seven top awards in the contest sponsored by the Hawai'i Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

At the award ceremonies Friday night, the Maui News won two first-place honors, as did Pacific Business News, The Spirit of Aloha, and Environment Hawai'i. KITV took four TV news awards, while KHNL won two.

Judges were from the Greater Oregon and Cincinnati chapters of the national journalism organization.

Awards for the Advertiser went to Christie Wilson for investigative reporting, Timothy Hurley for long-form feature writing, Christina Sykes for feature page design, Ann Miller for sports reporting, and to Greg Taylor, Jon Orque and Martha Hernandez for an informational graphic, "The Other Hawai'i."

The Advertiser swept the online awards, with top honors for its 2004 election coverage and for the voyage of Hokule'a.

Bruce Dunford, longtime reporter for the Associated Press who retired last year, won first place in government reporting for his report on how Gov. Linda Lingle kept secret her trip to Iraq until she was already there.

Beverly Ann Deepe Keever, a University of Hawai'i-Manoa communications professor, won the enterprise reporting award for all print media for a story in Honolulu Weekly, "Suffering Secrecy Exile," which the judges described as "a gripping, compelling story, made more attractive by polished writing."

Melissa Tanji and Brian Perry of the Maui News won the spot news award for their coverage of a shark attack, which judges described as "textbook spot news coverage, but flawless, gripping story-telling as well."

The other Maui News award was for a sports photo by Amanda Cowan, which judges said showed both action and emotion.

Two top photo awards, with competition among all print media, went to F.L. Morris of the Star-Bulletin. Ed Greevy of Honolulu Magazine won for a photo essay.

Honolulu Magazine also won for a Ronna Bolante and Michael Keany report on housing, a David Thompson profile, a feature by Bolante and Keany on Hawai'i's 50 greatest albums, a cover on "Ghost Stories" by Jayson Harper, a feature by Katherine Nichols, and John Heckathorn's "Dining" feature.

The Star-Bulletin's Dan Martin won for business reporting, while Mary Vorsino took the short-form feature award. Adam Sparks won for news design. Lee Catterall was honored for editorial opinion. And Corky Trinidad won for editorial cartooning.

The judges awarded the column-writing trophy to 1st Sgt. Robert Jennings for "A Soldier's Story," a series he did for the Star-Bulletin from Iraq.

Two of the Star-Bulletin's awards were won or shared by reporters who now work for the Advertiser. Rob Perez was honored for his report on evaluating Hawai'i's judges. Rick Daysog, along with Craig Gima and other reporters still with the Star-Bulletin, won for the newspaper's coverage of former University of Hawai'i President Evan Dobelle.

Other top awards went to Don Chapman of Midweek, Kayla Rosenfeld of Hawai'i Public Radio, and Heidi Chang for Voice of America reporting.

Three student journalists also won first-place awards: Lorretta Sherwood for news writing for Environment Hawai'i, Ralph Kagehiro for illustration in Hana Hou! Magazine, and Alexandre Da Silva for a feature in Ka Leo O Hawaii.

Two TV awards went to Pamela Young and one each to Keoki Kerr and Gary Sprinkle, all of KITV. Videojournalist Duncan Armstrong of KHNL also won two awards, including one shared with reporter Stephanie Lum.
