Antonio hired as coach of Mililani softball team

Rose Antonio has been named to replace retiring Mike Okimoto as head softball coach for defending state champion Mililani High School.

Antonio, 30, was a longtime assistant to Okimoto and a former standout for Mililani and the University of Hawai'i.

Okimoto retired after 11 hugely successful seasons at the helm, during which the Trojans won five O'ahu Interscholastic Association championships, including four straight from 1999-2002.



FOOTBALL

Elam, West added to Team USA Hawai'i

Former University of Hawai'i players Matt Elam and John West were added to Team USA Hawai'i, which will compete in the Japan-USA Bowl in Tokyo on July 14.

Elam replaced fellow defensive lineman Matt Faga, who pulled out of the game.

West led the Warriors in rushing in 2002-'03.

Team USA Hawai'i is a volunteer team that will compete against the best players from the X League (formerly NFL Japan).



GOLF

Hilo's Hayashi finishes 50th in South Carolina

Hilo's Kevin Hayashi shot a 78 yesterday and finished tied for 50th at the 38th PGA Club Professional Championship at Kiawah Island, S.C.

Hayashi finished with a four-day total of 307 and was 18 strokes behind winner Mike Small.



PADDLING

Lokahi beats Kane'ohe, 67-66, in Hui Wa'a

Lokahi Canoe Club captured its first victory in the Na 'Ohana Hui Wa'a season yesterday at Kailua Beach Park.

Lokahi won the regatta on the final race of the day and defeated Kane'ohe, 67-66.

Trailing 66-64 entering the final race, Lokahi earned three points with its runner-up finish in the mixed open six-person race.

Kane'ohe had won three consecutive regattas since the start of the season.

Yesterday, Lokahi won four races and Kane'ohe won seven.

Koa Kai scored 46 points to win the AA Division for medium sized clubs.

Waikiki Beach Boys scored 35 points to win the A Division for smaller clubs.
