Tonight's Must-See

Tonight on KHNL News 8

Help man's best friend and the Hawaii Dog Foundation by lending a paw! Tune in tonight to KHNL News 8 first at 5 where you can adopt one of our friendly canines. We have your latest news, sports and weather tonight on KHNL News 8.

"Empire" debut, 8 p.m., ABC. Sprawling across the known world, the Roman Empire was an awesome force. Most people feared it; some wanted to rule it. Now this story weaves fact and fiction into a potent mixture. In this version, Caesar (Canadian actor Colm Feore) is wise and caring, Marc Antony (Vincent Regan) is strong and scheming. Caesar's heir Octavius (terrific newcomer Santiago Cabrera) is a lover, not a fighter. Octavius is linked with two fictional characters, a powerful gladiator and a pure vestal virgin. Over the next five weeks, talented actors will be part of an epic story.

Of Note

"Average Joe: The Joes Strike Back" debut, 7 p.m., NBC. Somehow, this show has found the perfect target. Anna Chudoba, 26, seems to be bright and beautiful, a hard worker whose family emigrated from Poland when she was 5. She had been so busy that she had never heard of this show, which mixes ordinary guys with a gorgeous woman. The difference this time is that the guys know what's happening from the beginning. In this first hour, we start to root for many of them.

"Rescue Me," 7 p.m., FX. Here's one of the show's best episodes, brilliantly juggling humor and deep tragedy. Tommy (Denis Leary) uses a barbershop quartet in a desperate effort to find his estranged wife and kids.

"The New Heroes," 8 p.m., PBS. Concludes next week. The stories here span the globe, telling of individuals who make a difference. In India, one man rescues slaves; another performs eye surgery for the penniless. In Zambia, a man works with AIDS orphans; in San Francisco, a woman gives ex-convicts a fresh start. Many of these people make use of business skills and are dubbed "social entrepreneurs." This series sometimes gets too repetitious, but it has some great stories.

"I Want to Be a Hilton," 8 p.m., NBC. Last week's opener introduced Kathy Hilton as a likable guide, nudging contestants into the upper class. Tonight, she takes them to a charity auction at one of her homes in the Hamptons. Her famous daughters, Paris and Nicky, help. It's a fun hour, with a few grating characters mixed in.

"House," 8 p.m., Fox. In a terrific rerun, Dr. House tries to help a teen, but his mind seems clouded by efforts to kick his pill addiction.
