Irons brothers fall in Rip Curl event

Kaua'i brothers Andy and Bruce Irons were eliminated from the Rip Curl Search men's surfing contest yesterday.

The third and fourth rounds were completed in 4- to 6-foot waves at St. Leu, Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.

Andy Irons, the three-time defending world champion, was upset by Brazil's Peterson Rosa in the fourth round, 16,84-14.53.

Bruce Irons was defeated by South Africa's Travis Logie in the third round, 12.0-11.5.

The Irons brothers were the only Hawai'i surfers remaining in the competition. Fred Patacchia Jr. and Kalani Robb were eliminated in the earlier rounds.

The Rip Curl Search is the fifth of 12 events on the 2005 World Championship Tour.



BASKETBALL

Former Jazz guard Stockton at camp

Retired NBA All-Star John Stockton will host the Basketball Essential Skills Camp for youngsters 10 to 17 at Manoa Valley District Park, July 6 to 8.

The former Utah Jazz point guard, who is the NBA's career leader in assists and steals, will help teach fundamentals of the game, along with 13 other instructors.

The camp will emphasize technique, footwork and balance in both individual and team drills from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.
