12-year-old girl killed on Kaua'i

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A 12-year-old girl was killed yesterday in a head-on collision on Kaumuali'i Highway just west of the Kipu Road junction.Police said the girl, a visitor from Oakland, Calif., was a rear-seat passenger in a car that crossed the center line and hit a pickup truck at 3:30 p.m. Two other passengers in the car were last reported in serious condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. The car's 43-year-old female driver and a Koloa woman who was the lone occupant of the truck were treated for minor injuries and released.
The highway was closed to traffic for about two hours after the wreck.
Police said the victim's mother was in a car following the vehicle that crashed. The names of the victims have not been released.
