Vantz Singletary, who coaches the University of Hawai'i's defensive linemen, has accepted an internship with the San Francisco 49ers.

The internship runs from mid-July through Aug. 2. UH's training camp opens Aug. 4.

"The timing is perfect," Singletary said.

Singletary, who joined UH in 1999, previously served internships with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals.

With the 49ers, Singletary will work with his uncle, Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary, and reunite with former UH players Jeff Ulbrich and Isa'ako "Isaak" Sopoaga.

"I'm looking forward to that," Singletary said. "I saw Isaak the other day, and he gave me a bear hug. I think I'm going to need some treatment. He's unbelievably strong."

Singletary will receive a $2,500 stipend, plus room and board.

"Even if they didn't pay me a penny, I'd still go," he said, "(An internship) always kick starts me. It revs me up for training camp. It gets my motor going. ...

"I can't wait to work with my uncle. I want to steal some of his intensity, bring it back here and add it to what we're doing."
