San Jose soccer star Ching to have surgery

BRIAN CHING

SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose Earthquakes forward Brian Ching will have surgery today to repair a torn right hamstring muscle.

The Hale'iwa native and Kamehameha Schools graduate, who was injured in a reserve league match Sunday, is expected to miss several weeks.

Ching had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed the tear, then team doctors scheduled the surgery. He originally strained his hamstring May 14 against FC Dallas and missed five matches.

Ching is tied for second on the team with four goals and also has two assists.

In addition, midfielder James Twellman tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during practice Tuesday and will probably miss the remainder of the 2005 season.
