TENNIS

Doubles for 35th time

The 35th annual Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles will celebrate the game's Grand Slam events. The tournament is July 24 to Aug. 6 and offers $7,000 in prize money.

This year, a pro-set (first to eight) third-place playoff will be added at 6 p.m. on the final night. The championship will start at 7:15 p.m. and be cut from best-of-five sets to best-of-three.

Matches are also scheduled at 6 p.m. and 7:15 every other night. The first week is qualifying, with seeded teams playing the second week. Saturday, July 30, and Friday, Aug. 5, are rain dates. No matches are scheduled.

A portion of the proceeds will support junior tennis in the Windward community and tsunami relief efforts.

The Peter Isaak Outstanding Sportsmanship Award and Sam Caldwell trophy for Best Performance by an Amateur will be announced at the final.

Kailua Racquet Club is at 629 Oneawa St. Parking is available at Church of the Nazarene across the street.

Gold Passes cost $600 for four, $320 for two or $170 for one.

Call Kailua Racquet Club (263-4444) for more information and details on sponsorships.

Lajola unbeaten

'Aiea's Dennis Lajola won all four of his matches — two singles and two doubles — at the Jr. Davis Cup qualifying in Mexico recently.

Team USA defeated Guatamala, Mexico and Canada to advance to the finals in Barcelona in September.

Lajola, 16, is now on a three-tournament swing in Europe, playing International Tennis Federation events in Holland, Germany and Austria. His current ranking in the ITF, open to players in their teens, is 130th.

PADDLING

Regatta at Waimanalo

Sunday's Koa Kai Regatta outrigger canoe races will be held at Waimanalo Beach Park.

The regatta was originally scheduled for Ke'ehi Lagoon, but an ongoing problem with tiny jellyfish prompted officials to move the event. Races will begin around 8:30 a.m.

The Koa Kai Regatta is part of the Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a organization.

The O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association will hold its Walter J. Macfarlane Regatta Monday at Waikiki Beach.
