HOMEGROWN REPORT
Eldredge a hit with California softball

Advertiser Staff

California senior outfielder Kaleo Eldredge (Baldwin '01 of Wailuku) has sparked the No. 1 Golden Bears with her bat this season.

KALEO ELDREGDE

Eldredge has started all 12 games for defending national champion California (11-1) and is batting .382 in the No. 4 spot.

She hit her first home run of the season — a two-run blast — in a 7-3 victory over No. 5 Tennessee on Feb. 26 at the Palm Springs Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

"Kaleo has a powerful bat," California coach Diane Ninemire said. "It's great to have that kind of power out of your center fielder. She's very disciplined. She can lay one down or power up. Kaleo is a catsy player and a heads-up baserunner."

California suffered its first loss of the season to No. 16 Texas A&M, 5-2, earlier in the Palm Springs Classic.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

• Washington State freshman guard Derrick Low (Iolani '04 of Honolulu) has started the past 18 games and leads the Cougar freshmen in scoring with 7.0 points per game and assists with 60.

His four steals at Arizona State on Jan. 27 and eight assists against USC on Feb. 5 were the most in a game by a WSU freshman since the 2000-01 season. Low is one of five WSU true freshmen to have made at least one start this season, a school record.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

• UC Santa Barbara senior forward Brandy Richardson (Kalaheo '01 of 'Aiea) injured her left ankle late in the second half Feb. 24 against Pacific. The reigning Big West defensive Player of the Year and fifth-leading rebounder in UCSB history with 822 career boards is sidelined indefinitely.

• Eastern Kentucky freshman forward Nancy Hoist (Konawaena '04 of Captain Cook) is averaging 2.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game for the Lady Colonels (20-7). Hoist was the 2004 Advertiser All-State Girls Basketball Player of the Year — the first from a Neighbor Island since Waiakea guard Jenny Kaeo in 1989.

Hoist's teammate, sophomore center Fatai Hala'api'api (Lahainaluna '02 of Lahaina) is out for the season with a left knee injury.

• Fresno State senior forward Aritta Lane ('Aiea '01) is averaging 11.7 points and 6 rebounds for the Bulldogs (17-9). She has started all 26 games and will finish her regular season against visiting Hawai'i on Saturday.

• Cal State Northridge sophomore guard Megan Ching (Kamehameha '03 of Honolulu) has started 18 games for the Matadors (17-8). She is averaging 2.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
