List released of 24 schools to be taken over

The state Department of Education today released a list of 24 schools islandswide that will soon be taken over by the state under provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Using the law's most intense remedy here for the first time, the state will shift most decision-making authority from the schools to regional school superintendents. As part of the takeover, the superintendents could hire private education agencies to train teachers and assist in areas where student test scores lag.

The change officially takes effect with the 2005-06 school year. Here is the list of schools, by island:

O'ahu

  • 'Aiea Elementary
  • Central Middle
  • Dole Middle
  • Hau'ula Elementary
  • Jarrett Middle
  • Kahalu'u Elementary
  • Nanaikapono Elementary
  • Nanakuli High and Intermediate
  • Palolo Elementary
  • Wahiawa Middle
  • Wai'anae Intermediate
  • Waipahu Intermediate
  • Waiahole Elementary

Hawai'i

  • Hilo Intermediate
  • Kea'au Middle
  • Kealakehe Elementary
  • Na'alehu Elementary and Intermediate
  • Pahoa High and Intermediate

Maui

  • Kahului Elementary
  • Maunaloa Elementary
  • Pa'ia Elementary
  • Hana High and Elementary

Moloka'i

  • Moloka'i High
  • Moloka'i Intermediate

Kaua'i

  • None
