Tonight's Must-See

"Law & Order: Trial by Jury" debut, 9 p.m., NBC. The fourth "Law & Order" series sticks to the franchise formula. This new show focuses on a jury trial, including preparations on both sides. Bebe Neuwirth stars as an assistant district attorney, looking even more forlorn than in her "Cheers" days as Lilith. The opener has a brutal Broadway producer — played by Tony Bill, who is actually a nonbrutal (presumably) Hollywood producer — charged with killing a sweet young actress who loved him. There's no body, no proof of a murder. The defendant has hired a sleek lawyer (Annabella Sciorra) with big fees and no conscience. After today, "Trial by Jury" moves to 9 p.m. Fridays. These are the only two episodes Jerry Orbach filmed before he died of cancer in December.

Of Note

"The O.C.," 7 p.m., Fox. The "sweeps" ratings period has just ended, so there will be more reruns. This is the one in which Colin Hanks (Tom's son) plays the star of a TV show a lot like "O.C."; he invites the teens to a party.

"Joey," 7 p.m., NBC. In a rerun, Joey decides the way to meet women is to join a book club; that, however, might involve reading a book. Meanwhile, Gina's jealous of a cosmetology-school classmate.

"Will & Grace," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Will and Grace debate the notion of being friendly to strangers. Meanwhile, Jack is mocked for his Cher doll.

"The Apprentice," 8 p.m., NBC. The teams design miniature golf courses.

"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. In this rerun, a nanny disappears with a baby.
