UH invites testimony on tuition increase plan

Advertiser Staff

A series of six public hearings will begin Monday on the proposed tuition increase schedule for the University of Hawai'i system through the next five years.

The increases are being proposed by the UH administration to bring the university's prices in line with tuition at comparable institutions on the Mainland.

Public testimony is invited.

The tuition proposals would increase costs at each UH campus beginning in the 2006-07 academic year, rising each year through 2010-11. The biggest increases would be at Manoa, with lesser ones at the smaller four-year campuses and the community colleges.

Under the proposed increase schedule, Manoa's full-time tuition would rise by $864 annually, bringing tuition up to $7,824 annually by 2010. That would more than double the present tuition of $3,504 annually.

UH-Hilo's tuition would rise from $2,472 annually to $5,352 annually in 2010; UH-West O'ahu would increase from $2,256 annually to $4,896 annually by 2010; the community colleges' tuition would increase from $1,470 annually to $2,670 annually in 2010.
