Parents fair at Ho'ala School

Ho'ala School in Wahiawa will host a parent education fair from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Parents will be able to choose three workshops on topics such as handling heated situations, dealing with nontraditional families, substance awareness, play techniques to stimulate children up to 4 years old, how to raise a child's IQ, bully prevention, keeping children safe on the Internet, minimizing conflicts with strong-willed or passive children, creating loving father-child relationships, managing children's anger and other feelings, how parents can help teens and Learning Gym.

The fair is $15 per person, or $25 per couple.



Study abroad in 12 countries

The American Institute for Foreign Study is accepting applications for 19 summer-study-abroad programs through March 15.

College students can choose from three- to 12-week programs in Austria, China, the Czech Republic, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Puerto Rico, Russia, South Africa, Spain and Canada.

Monthlong educational tours of Europe also are available.

Costs range from $3,999 to $9,359, which includes airfare. Scholarships and financial aid are available.

Waipahu girl's poem in magazine

Tae Keller, 11, of Waipahu, has had a poem published in the March/April 2005 issue of New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams.

The bimonthly publication is edited by and for girls ages 8- 14.

Tae's poem "Halmoni, I Wish You a Pendant: A Poem for My Grandmother," was selected from hundreds to appear in this issue themed "We Are Family."

Pair to participate in conference

Joshua Huff of Moanalua High School and Krystal Choate of Lanakila Baptist High School have been selected to participate in the annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Conference program in Washington, D.C., this month.

At the conference, two top students will be selected to win a scholarship of $50,000 each. The other 100 participants will receive $1,000 scholarships each.

Kaua'i teen Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack in 2003, will be honored as one of two Free Spirit honorees for her efforts to improve the lives of others.



ACT registration deadline nears

Tomorrow is the deadline for college-bound students to register by mail for the nationwide ACT test on April 9.

The late-registration postmark deadline is March 18.

The cost is $28 for the regular test or $42 with an optional writing test, which some colleges will require from students entering college in fall 2006.

Parents night set for March 16

Aliamanu Middle School will hold a parents night March 16 on "Patrolling the Dark Side of the Internet." The program will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Honolulu police detective Chris Duque will discuss the risks and dangers that children face when they visit the Internet unsupervised.

The presentation will include an online tour of the Internet. No children under 18 will be allowed at the program.
