Cavanaugh leaves UH for Oregon State

Mike Cavanaugh, who coached the University of Hawai'i football team's offensive linemen for the past six seasons, has accepted a similar coaching job with Oregon State.

Cavanaugh made his decision this morning, then broke the news to the offensive line in a meeting this morning. Some players emerged from the meeting in tears.

UH has scheduled a news conference this morning to announce the decision.

Cavanaugh, 42, earned a compensation package of $100,000, which included a $10,000 housing allowance.

The Board of Regents was expected to approve a raise to his pay ceiling this month, which would have increased his compensation package to about $150,000.

Oregon State pledged to match that proposed salary. In a meeting with boosters yesterday, Oregon State told Cavanaugh it would increase its offer.

At UH, Cavanaugh developed five players who were selected in the National Football League draft.
