Low-cost homes lacking at four sites

Four Hawai'i communities rank among the top 50 U.S. tourist destinations lacking adequate affordable housing.

Ka'anapali, Maui, was the highest among local communities, ranking 16th nationwide. Wailea, Maui, was 18th; Po'ipu, Kaua'i, was 17th, and Keauhou on the Big Island was 40th.

The rankings by The Wyndham Financial Group are based on a formula that weighs housing prices, rents and income.

"Skyrocketing prices of second homes drive up all housing costs, forcing year-round residents to move. Local businesses can't find or keep workers as rents become unaffordable," said William Hettinger, Wyndham CEO.

Hawaiian leads in several areas

Hawaiian Airlines led the airline industry in January for punctuality, baggage handling and fewest flights canceled while ranking fourth for fewest consumer complaints, as measured by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Hawaiian had a 92.6 percent on-time performance compared to an industry average of 71.4 percent. The carrier has led the industry in on-time performance for 15 consecutive months.
