Baseball 'Bows snap three-game skid, 9-0

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Stephen Bryant was his usual reliable self, but more important, his offense found some spark to help Hawai'i beat South Florida, 9-0, last night and snap a three-game losing streak on the third day of First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament.

Stephen Bryant

The Rainbows stayed above .500 at 8-7 and won their first game of the tournament. They play nationally ranked teams Wichita State tonight and Louisiana Lafayette tomorrow.

A Les Murakami Stadium crowd of 936 attended the three games yesterday.

Bryant (3-0) allowed three hits and three walks with a career-high 11 strikeouts in going a season-high eight innings to win his third consecutive decision. Redshirt freshman left-hander Isaac Kamai allowed a walk in a scoreless ninth to finish off the Bulls (9-7 and 1-2) for the team's first shutout of the season.

Run support came early and often for the Rainbows, who had 11 hits. Junior left fielder Jeff Piaskowski, making his first start of the season, ignited a three-run second by hammering a fastball to the right-center alley for a two-run double. Piaskowski credited support from the bench.

"Our bench had a lot of energy today," he said. "We had a lot of intensity coming out of our bullpen (where the relievers were watching the game), just cheering and lending everyone support. Everyone came out with a lot of energy."

Also having a big night was freshman catcher Erik Ammon, who was 2 for 2 with a walk, two runs scored and a sacrifice. He entered the game as a pinch-hitter for starter Esteban Lopez, who aggravated a previous elbow strain after throwing out Ty Taborelli on a steal attempt and also had a blister on his hand, UH coach Mike Trapasso said.

"(The injury) provided an opportunity for Ammon," Trapasso said.

Ammon started the previous night, going 1 for 4.

"Coach Meij (Keith Komeiji) says, 'always be ready' since the first game of the season," Ammon said. "So I was ready when I got the call."

Meanwhile, Bryant gave up three hits, but one was a flare single to right by Brian Baisley and another was a misjudged flyball double by Tim Orlosky in the first. Piaskowski came in on the fly, only the ball was over him.

"I knew the baseball gods were going to get me tonight," Piaskowski said. "I told my buddy, 'You watch, the first fly ball (to me) is going to be interesting.' "

Bryant minimized any damage from the double by striking out the next two batters. In his final inning of the night, he struck out the side. He said his curveball is the reason for his increased strikeout totals this season. He had 10 two outings ago against Pacific.

"I get ahead, that's my out pitch," Bryant said. "It breaks so late. Other than that, my changeup was good and my fastball was down."

The Rainbows tagged USF starter Casey Hudspeth (2-1) for seven runs on 10 hits and four walks in six innings.

"Our approach was good (at the plate)," Trapasso said. "We were aggressive."

WICHITA STATE 6, UC DAVIS 4

Nick McCoola's two-run single with no outs in the top of the ninth snapped a 4-4 tie and lifted Wichita State.

Joe Muich led off with a double to left before being replaced by pinch runner Brian Hoy. Hoy advanced to third on a pick-off throwing error by pitcher Sean Rooney. Kenny Waddell and Phil Napolitan were intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up McCoola's clutch hit.

The Shockers (13-1 and 2-1) led 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, when the Aggies (7-8 and 1-2) scored three to take a 3-2 lead.

Wichita State regained the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI ground out by Damon Sublett and steal of home by Derek Schermerhorn.

UC Davis tied it in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Brandon Oliver.

Dallas Morris led off the sixth with a walk, advanced to second on Justin Morgan's sacrifice and remained there when Jameson Parker walked and John Coker struck out. Landry then singled to break the tie.

Louisiana Lafayette added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI bunt single by Morris.

Sacramento State (6-8 and 1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a run-scoring single by Matt Wilson and made it 2-0 in the third on Brett Flowers' RBI double.
