Safari Club honors Big Island hunter Yap

Advertiser Staff

Matthew Yap of Kealakekua, Hawai'i, was recognized by the Safari Club International with a 2005 Young Hunter Award.

Yap was one of four youths nationwide to be honored.

He began hunting at age 6 and by the time he was 9, Yap had hunted on four continents: Africa, Australia as well as North and South America. He was a licensed hunter by 10.

Yap has volunteered his time in preventing the extinction of the silversword plant and the nene goose.

SCI established the Young Hunter Award in 1987 to recognize youth who "excel in outdoor sportsmanship, are active volunteers and contribute to local SCI activities."
