Tonight's Must-See
The Rainbow Warriors basketball team takes on rival Fresno State tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center. Watch the game live at 7 on K5. Then catch the highlights on KHNL News 8 at 10. "One Night, One Star: Usher Live," 7 p.m., Showtime. Usher, now hot on the music charts, performs in Puerto Rico, with a preshow special at 6:30. "Law & Order," 7 p.m., NBC. Starting this three-hour block of reruns, we have police probing a massacre of heroin dealers. They trace it to an Afghan warlord who claims he has diplomatic immunity. Federal officials want the whole thing dropped. "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," 8 p.m., NBC. A high school basketball star is missing, and a private investigator has been killed. "NCIS," 8 p.m., CBS. On the ABC hit "Lost," Terry O'Quinn plays one of the most fascinating characters, the unflinching Locke. Now here's a rerun from last season. He plays a Marine colonel, accused of defecting from Iraq with $2 million. Gibbs (Mark Harmon) scrambles to exonerate his former commander. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," 9 p.m., NBC. A 7-year-old boy disappeared in 1980. Now his body has been found, just as the prime suspect in that case nears execution in another one.
"Jerry Maguire" (1996), 7 p.m., ABC. Here are all the usual elements for a top movie. There's a terrific script about a sports agent who develops a conscience. A gifted director (Cameron Crowe, who also wrote said script) took it from there by hiring a potent star (Tom Cruise) to play Jerry. So far, that adds up to a splendid mix of comedy and drama. Pushing "Jerry Maguire" over the top, however, is Crowe's brilliant eye for supporting roles. Cuba Gooding Jr. won an Academy Award for his work as Jerry's would-be client. Jerry O'Connell, showing off a new physique since his "Stand By Me" days, plays a prospect. You'll also see Lucy Liu, Jay Mohr, Eric Stoltz, Kelly Preston and Regina King. Best of all, however, were two people who were unknown at the time. Renee Zellweger plays the one staffer who believes in Jerry. Jonathan Lipnicki, only 5 when this was filmed, plays her son.
