Boys', girls' team titles still up for grabs today

Advertiser Staff

Tight races in the team standings after the yesterday's opening rounds should make for an interesting conclusion tonight in the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association/Chevron State Wrestling Championships at Blaisdell Arena.

The semifinals and consolation rounds are set to begin at 10:30 a.m., with the girls finals at 4:30 p.m. and the boys finals at 6:30 p.m.

Kahuku and Lahainaluna are deadlocked with 65 points each in the boys team standings, with Kamehameha (64.5) and Baldwin (63.5) breathing down their necks. Punahou (51), Saint Louis (41.5), Pearl City (38.5), Iolani (36), Roosevelt (34) and Wai'anae (32.50) round out the top 10.

In the girls standings, Baldwin (59.5) leads the way but Kahuku (57), Farrington (51), Moanalua (49), Iolani (46.5) and Pearl City (45) still are within striking distance. Waipahu (40), Kealakehe (34), Kamehameha (33) and Kaiser (29) round out the top 10.

All 14 No. 1 seeds on the boys' side advanced to the semifinals. On the girls' side, Kapolei freshman Chaelyn Tan upset No. 1 seed Nicole Chroney of Punahou, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. Tan's brother, Ikaika, died in a car accident in January and a banner reading "In Memory of Ikaika Tan 2005 Kapolei Hurricanes" hung below the lodges.

Sheryl Manglaylay of Lahainaluna, the No. 1 seed at 114 pounds, did not make the trip to Honolulu. No. 2 Catherine Chan of Iolani was pinned by Roosevelt's Cory Arisumi in the quarterfinals.
