Halau Mohala 'Ilima presents annual show

By Vicki Viotti
Advertiser Staff Writer

Halau Mohala 'Ilima, under the direction of kumu hula Mapuana de Silva, offers its annual indoor concert, "Holomua Ka No'eau," at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hawai'i Theatre.

The concert previews what the halau will present at the Merrie Monarch Festival competition in Hilo March 31 through April 2.

The program will include the Miss Aloha Hula soloist entry, as well as the group kahiko (ancient) and group 'auana (contemporary) works, with introductions by Kihei de Silva. The 29-year-old halau is the only hula school that has participated in 27 consecutive Merrie Monarch competitions.

Tickets for the fund-raising event cost $18 and $28, including the $2 theater restoration fee. Tickets are available from the Hawai'i Theatre box office at 528-0506, and from halau members at 261-0689.

Musicians will include Ho-lunape, David Ka'io and 'Ulaleo and 'Ale'a. Organizers promise an appearance by "a surprise guest kupuna."

Concert proceeds benefit the Makalei Foundation, established to support the cultural and educational activities of Halau Mohala 'Ilima.ĘThe foundation offers hula scholarships and provides teaching assistants and materials for keiki and adult hula and Hawaiian language classes.

For information on tickets, classes and other events, call Mapuana de Silva at 261-0689.
